Description

Overview

The orange ball float is a round plastic ball that fits onto the arm of a float valve and rides on the water surface. When the water drops, the ball drops and opens the valve. When the tank is full the ball lifts and closes it. These balls are cheap and they do wear out: they crack in the sun, fill with water or get knocked loose, and then the valve stops shutting off. Replacement balls are needed on farm tanks and troughs in Limpopo, the Free State and the Eastern Cape, on rainwater tanks across Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, and on site water tanks. Keep a spare in the bakkie or workshop, because a failed ball can empty a tank onto the ground overnight. My tank keeps overflowing. Is the ball the problem?

Often, yes. A cracked ball fills with water and sinks, so the valve never closes. Shake the ball: if you hear water inside, replace it. If the ball is fine, the valve seat may be worn, and the valve or kit may need replacing instead.
