Overview

This rib block mould makes one concrete rib block per drop. Rib blocks are the hollow infill units that sit between precast beams in a rib-and-block suspended slab, the floor system used on many double-storey homes in South Africa.

Making your own lets a contractor or block yard supply slab blocks on the same order as walling blocks. The mould is fully manual, so there is no power to arrange. For hollow walling blocks with the same type of setup, the electric 1-drop hollow block mould adds vibration.

Where it works

Builders putting up double-storey houses in Gauteng and Polokwane, block yards that already sell walling blocks, and contractors on clinic and school extensions all use rib blocks. Because rib blocks end up inside a structural slab, consistency matters more than speed. Measure cement by the bucket for every batch, keep the mix damp rather than wet, and clean the mould every few drops so the block edges stay true. Cure the blocks damp under plastic for at least a week before stacking.
