Description

Overview

This lintel mould is a 3 m adjustable form with a built-in tensioner for four reinforcement wires, used to cast precast concrete lintels for doors and windows. You tension the wires, fill the mould, vibrate it, and once the concrete has cured you release the tension and cut the lintels to length.

Pulling the wires tight before casting puts the lintel in compression, so it spans an opening and carries the brickwork above without sagging. The adjustable length means one mould covers the lintel sizes builders ask for most. At about 55 kg it is a solid piece of steelwork that stays straight from cast to cast. Strip it, oil it and it is ready for the next pour the same afternoon.

Questions about this product

Why do lintels need tensioned wires?

Concrete is strong when squeezed but weak when bent. Tensioning the wires before casting locks the lintel in compression, so when bricks load it from above it does not crack or sag over the opening. That is why a prestressed lintel can be slimmer than a plain reinforced one.

Can I make shorter lintels with this mould?

Yes. The length is adjustable, so you can cast the common door and window sizes from one mould. Many yards also cast a full 3 m length and cut it into shorter pieces once the concrete has cured, which saves time on set-up.

How much is delivery to Mbombela?

The mould ships at about 60 kg, which puts it in the 30 to 60 kg band at R950 anywhere in South Africa, Mbombela included. Our own trucks leave from Polokwane and usually arrive in 1 to 3 days. Orders of R20,000 or more including VAT are delivered free.

What wire do I use in the lintels?

Use proper prestressing or high-tensile reinforcing wire suited to the tensioner clamps. Ask us before your first cast and we will tell you the wire diameter the clamps take, so you buy the right wire from your steel merchant and the clamps grip properly.
