Overview

This is a 55 W UV-C replacement lamp, 930 mm long with a 4-pin connection, for open-ended stainless steel UV sterilizer housings. It slides into the quartz sleeve and gives germicidal light at 254 nm, listed as the UVT5-455.

A UV lamp can keep glowing long after its germicidal output has dropped, so you cannot judge the lamp by its light. Replace it on schedule to keep the system working. Always check the lamp length, wattage and pin connection against your unit before ordering.

Where it works

In-line UV chambers sit as the last stage after sediment and carbon filters, and the lamp is what makes them work. Homes on borehole water in Limpopo, lodges, clinics and small packing sheds all rely on it. For good results the water entering the chamber must be clear, and the quartz sleeve must stay clean, because scale or dirt on the sleeve cuts the UV reaching the water. UV disinfects only: it does not remove sand, rust, salts, metals or chlorine. Switch the power off and let the lamp cool before you handle it, and never look at a lit UV-C lamp. Wipe the quartz sleeve with a clean cloth while you have the housing open, and write the fitting date on the unit so you know when the next change is due.

It fits open-ended stainless steel UV chambers that take a 55 W, 930 mm, 4-pin lamp inside a quartz sleeve. Check the length, wattage and connection on your unit. If you are unsure, send us a photo of the old lamp and we will confirm.

How often must I replace the lamp?

UV lamps lose germicidal output with age, even when they still light up. Replace the lamp at the interval your unit's maker gives, and clean the quartz sleeve at the same time. Do not use the glow as proof the lamp is still working.

Does UV remove sediment or chlorine?

No. UV only disinfects. Sand, mud, rust, dissolved salts, heavy metals and chlorine need sediment, carbon or specialist filters before the UV stage. The best order is source, sediment filter, carbon filter, UV, then your taps.
