Overview

The 55 W submersible UV-C light is a locally manufactured unit that hangs inside a 2000 L to 5000 L water tank and disinfects the stored water. It deactivates bacteria, viruses and other waterborne pathogens, and keeps stored water from going sour.

A submersible light works on the whole tank rather than a single pass of water, so there is far more dwell time under the lamp. The lamp sits in a quartz sleeve and gives germicidal UV-C at 253.7 nm for about 9000 effective hours. A removable weight keeps it hanging straight, and the kit has what you need to fix it.

Where it works

This size fits the tank most homes and small farms already own. Put it in a 5000 L rainwater tank in KZN, a borehole tank in the Limpopo bushveld or a 2500 L backup tank at a school. Pair it with a filter that removes particles down to 0.2 micron so the light reaches the water, and consider added UV capacity if you draw most of the tank every day. Rainwater from a clean roof is the easiest source to treat.

Questions about this product

Is 55 W enough for my 5000 L tank?

Yes, this unit is listed for tanks of 2000 L to 5000 L. If you draw most of the water out every day, the water has less time under the lamp, so consider a second light or a larger unit. Tell us your daily usage and we will advise.

Does the UV light replace a filter?

No. UV-C disinfects but does not remove particles. For good results, filter the water down to about 0.2 micron first. Borehole water should be tested to decide the filtration, and municipal water can be filtered for drinking. Rainwater from a clean roof needs the least treatment.

How do I power it?

It runs on 220 V, 50 Hz at 0.3 A, so a normal plug point near the tank is fine. If power was interrupted you may need to unplug it for five minutes before restarting. Keep the plug and ballast dry and out of the weather.
