Overview

The 145 W submersible UV-C light is a locally manufactured in-tank disinfection unit for large storage tanks of 10,000 L and up. It hangs in the water and deactivates bacteria, viruses and other pathogens before they reach your taps.

Unlike a single-pass UV device, a submersible light works on the whole volume of the tank, so the water has much more dwell time under the lamp. It also stops stored water going sour and discourages insects. The lamp sits in a quartz sleeve, emits germicidal UV-C at 253.7 nm and is rated for 9000 effective hours.

Big tanks on farms, mines and municipal sites hold water for days, and that is exactly when bacteria multiply. A 145 W light suits a 10,000 L or 20,000 L tank on a Free State farm, a lodge in the Bushveld or a clinic storing borehole water. Match the light to your water source: a borehole report will tell you what filtration is needed, rainwater from a clean roof needs little, and municipal water can be filtered for drinking. For best UV-C results, filter down to 0.2 micron first. If daily draw is very high, you may need extra UV capacity.

It is sized for tanks of 10,000 L and upwards. For tanks of 2000 L to 5000 L, the 55 W submersible light is the right match. If your tank sits between those sizes, or you draw most of the water out daily, ask us before you buy so the UV dose matches your usage.

Do I need a filter as well?

Yes, filtering helps a lot. UV-C works best when particles are removed first, down to about 0.2 micron, which keeps minerals in the water. Borehole water should be tested to decide the filtration, municipal water can be filtered for drinking, and clean roof runoff needs the least.
