Overview

The molasses bucket is a 25 L feeder that lets cattle take molasses and similar liquid supplements from rotating rollers instead of from the ground or an open trough. You fill the bucket, fit the specially designed lid, and the animals lick the exposed section of the roller.

As they lick, the roller turns through the molasses inside and brings fresh product to the surface. Cattle usually learn the action quickly, so it slots into an existing feeding programme without training. Less molasses ends up in the dirt, which means less wastage, less contamination and fewer sticky patches in the camp. Where it works

Molasses is a common energy source and carrier for supplements on cattle farms. In the Limpopo bushveld, the Free State and the Eastern Cape grazing camps, farmers put these buckets where animals gather, such as near water points and gates.

Feedlots and paddocks use them for supplementary feeding when veld quality drops in winter. Wash the roller and bucket between refills so old product does not ferment.
