Overview

A float valve fills a tank or trough and shuts the water off by itself when the level rises. This Torrenti model is brass, 20 mm, with an arm, and is the high-pressure type, built to handle supply lines that would batter a plastic valve. It is recommended for operating pressures between 200 kPa and 1600 kPa.

The supplier lists an arm size of 12 mm. You attach your own float to the arm, and as the water rises the float lifts the arm and closes the valve. Brass resists wear and repeated cycling better than plastic.

Where it works

It suits header tanks, farm storage tanks, stock troughs and cisterns where the supply comes off a borehole pump or municipal line at fairly high pressure. In Limpopo and Northern Cape stock country a brass valve will outlast a plastic one that cattle knock about. Check that your supply stays inside the recommended pressure range, and add a 20 mm compact ball valve upstream so you can isolate the float valve for servicing.
