Overview

This 220V electric drum pump uses a 750 W motor and a telescopic tube of about 1 m to empty a 200 litre drum of diesel, paraffin or light oil. It clamps to the drum and plugs into the wall, so there is no battery to worry about. A 220v electric drum pump like this is the usual choice for workshops and stores with mains power.

Where it works

Farm workshops in the Free State and Limpopo keep diesel in drums beside the shed, and a mains pump cuts the job from half an hour of hand-cranking to a couple of minutes. Garages and depots in Gauteng use it for oil and paraffin. Building contractors with a site supply fill generators and plant from drums. During load-shedding, a generator of 2 kVA or more will drive it. It is not suitable for petrol.

Questions about this product

Can I run this drum pump on a generator?

Yes. A generator of 2 kVA or more will start and run a 750 W motor, since motors draw extra current at start-up. Use an earthed lead and keep the generator well away from the drum and any spilt fuel.

Is the 220V pump faster than the 12V one?

Usually, yes. It has a 750 W motor against 300 W on the 12V version, so it holds flow better with a longer hose or a higher lift. Both list a 30 to 100 L/min range, so actual speed depends on your hose and fluid.

Will it pump petrol?

No. It is for diesel, paraffin and light oils only. The AC motor is not explosion-proof, so petrol vapour would be a serious fire risk. Choose an explosion-proof pump for petrol.
