Overview

The 1.5 kW (2 HP) 20Y controller is for single-phase borehole motors on a 220 V supply, and it is one of the larger single-phase pumps you can protect with this controller. It keeps watch over the motor and shuts it down before a dry borehole, a voltage fault or an overload can cause damage. With a bigger motor comes a bigger repair bill, so the protection pays for itself quickly.

For most 220 V boreholes we recommend the 20Y over a plain control box, because the box has no dry-run protection. The 20Y adds the protection plus automatic restart and a display. If your pump is a 2.2 kW unit, use the 2.2 kW 20Y controller instead, and always match motor power and voltage first.

Where it works

A 1.5 kW borehole pump is a common choice for irrigating vegetable plots, filling farm dams and supplying several houses on a farm, from the sandy soils of Limpopo to the grain lands of the Free State. Rural lines often sag when everyone loads up, so the under-voltage trip protects the motor from running hot.
