Overview

This 20 inch cartridge is a 5 micron melt-blown polypropylene sediment filter that fits Big Blue housings. It takes sand, silt, rust and suspended solids out of your water before they reach taps, appliances and later filter stages.

It is a standard 4.5 inch by 20 inch size and installs easily. A 5 micron rating catches finer particles than coarser cartridges, so it works well in front of carbon and UV stages. The usual guidance is to replace it about once a year, or sooner when your water carries more sediment or flow starts to drop.

Where it works

Use it as the first stage in a whole-house system on borehole, municipal or rainwater supply. Borehole owners in Limpopo and Mpumalanga often see fine silt that blocks drip lines and tap aerators, and this cartridge catches it. It protects pumps, geysers and the carbon cartridge behind it. A pressure gauge before and after the housing tells you when it is blocked. Turn off the water and release the pressure before opening the housing, then check that the O-ring sits flat when you close it. Keep a spare on the shelf, because a blocked cartridge starves the taps and pumps behind it.
