Description
Overview
This round retaining block machine is a steel mould for casting round concrete retaining blocks. The blocks stack into stepped walls that hold back soil on embankments, terraces and garden slopes, and the open centres can be filled with soil and planted.
Retaining blocks are heavy and bulky to transport, so casting them near the job saves money. For square-faced blocks, the two-cavity wall retaining block machine casts two per drop.
Key features
- Round retaining block mould
- Steel construction
- Blocks stack into stepped, plantable walls
- Lets landscapers cast blocks near the job
- Simple to clean between casts
Where it works
The round retaining block machine suits landscapers terracing gardens in hilly suburbs of KZN and the Western Cape, farms holding back dam walls and road cuttings in Mpumalanga, and municipal teams stabilising stormwater banks. Block yards also add retaining blocks for local builders. For pavers in the same yard, see the manual 4-drop paving machine, or browse all brick making machines.
Retaining blocks are heavy, so cast them as close to the wall as you can and give them a full week of damp curing before moving them. Use a well-graded mix with stone for strength, keep the mould clean between casts, and set the first course on a compacted, level footing.

Questions about this product
What are round retaining blocks used for?
They build stepped walls that hold soil on slopes, banks and terraces. Each block is stacked slightly back from the one below, and the hollow centre is filled with soil and planted, so the wall greens over. They are common in gardens, road cuttings and around stormwater channels.
How high can I build a retaining wall?
That depends on the soil, the slope and the load behind the wall. Low garden walls are often built by landscapers, but higher walls or walls near roads and houses need an engineer. Ask before you build anything over about a metre high.
Do you deliver to Pietermaritzburg?
Yes. The machine ships at 49 kg, which puts it in the 30 to 60 kg band at R950 to Pietermaritzburg or anywhere else in South Africa. Our own trucks run from Polokwane and normally arrive in 1 to 3 days. Orders of R20,000 or more including VAT are delivered free.
