Description
Overview
A mechanical line leak detector watches the pressurised line from a submersible turbine pump (STP) and cuts the flow if the line is leaking. This unit detects a leak of 3.8 L/h, about one gallon an hour, at 10 psi. If it finds one it restricts flow to below 11.4 L/h, which is slow enough that the attendant notices and the site can act before the loss grows. It needs no power or electronics. The detector activates 2 to 3 seconds after the nozzle is lifted, so expect a short delay at the start of a fuelling when the line is being tested.
Key features
- Detects a 3.8 L/h leak at 10 psi
- Restricted flow below 11.4 L/h when a leak is found
- Activation 2 to 3 seconds after nozzle lift
- Handles petrol, diesel, biodiesel and paraffin
- Mechanical operation with no wiring
Where it works
Forecourts in Gauteng, KZN and the Western Cape use leak detectors on every STP pressure line, and so do depot owners running underground tanks for farm, mining or transport fleets in Limpopo and Mpumalanga. It is a replacement or upgrade part for sites with older pumps. Tell us your pump model and we will confirm the fit before you order. For the connection side of an offloading point, see the bottom loading API 4 inch male coupler with handle and the version with sight glass and bronze ring. Browse more in fuel station accessories.

Questions about this product
How does a mechanical leak detector work on an STP line?
It sits in the pressurised line from the submersible pump and tests it each time the pump starts. If the line is tight, full flow is allowed. If it is leaking at about 3.8 L/h or more at 10 psi, flow is restricted to below 11.4 L/h. It needs no electrical power to do that.
Why is there a short delay after I lift the nozzle?
The detector takes 2 to 3 seconds to activate after the nozzle is lifted, because it is testing the line before allowing full flow. That is normal behaviour for a mechanical unit. If fuelling stays slow for much longer on a healthy line, have the line and detector checked by a qualified technician.
Which fuels can it be used with?
It is listed for petrol, diesel, biodiesel and paraffin. Check the connection and your pump model before ordering, as we do not state the thread size here. Send us your pump details on WhatsApp and we will confirm that this detector suits your submersible turbine pump line.
