A PVC 45 degree elbow turns a pressure pipe through half a right angle. It is the fitting to use when a 90 degree corner would choke the flow or the pipe has to jog around an obstacle.

Two 45 degree elbows make a smooth offset around a wall, pump base or tank stand, which is why pump installers and irrigation crews keep them in the bakkie. Use them on Limpopo borehole delivery lines, Free State centre-pivot feeds and KZN pool plant rooms. A pair also lets you turn a corner with less friction loss than a single 90. Glue them in with the PVC solvent cement and link runs with a PVC solvent socket.

When should I use a 45 degree elbow instead of a 90?

Use 45s when you want less friction and a smoother flow, or when the pipe only needs a slight offset. Two 45s in a row make a gentler corner than one 90 and are kinder to pump output on long runs, which matters on borehole and irrigation lines.

Does it need cement?

Yes. It is a solvent-weld fitting, so you clean the pipe, apply PVC solvent cement to pipe and socket, and push home. PVC solvent cement is listed in the same range, so you can add a tin to the same order.
