Description

Overview

This aquaponics DIY starter kit gives you a complete small fish-and-vegetable system: an 800 L fish tank and a 200 L grow bed, both made from one reconditioned food-grade 1000 L IBC. Fish waste feeds the plants, the plants clean the water, and the water returns to the fish.

It is built for first-time growers who want a working system without sourcing tanks, siphons and fittings piece by piece. If you outgrow it, the executive aquaponics DIY kit adds a sump and three grow beds, and a spare aquaponics submersible pump is cheap insurance. Browse more aquaponics kits on our site.

Key features

  • 800 L fish tank and 200 L grow bed from reconditioned food-grade IBC material
  • Draining siphon that works with the timer system
  • Water pump with piping and fittings, plus a timer
  • Air pump with piping and air stones to keep oxygen up
  • Set-up manual, with assembly in around 10 minutes
  • Optional extras: fish solids filter, upgraded pressure pump, new food-grade IBC upgrade

Where it works

A system this size suits home gardeners, schools, church and community gardens and small farm plots. Households in Gauteng and KZN use them to grow leafy greens, herbs and tomatoes beside a few fish, and growers in the Karoo and Northern Cape like how little water the closed loop wastes. In Limpopo and Mpumalanga, where summer heat is hard on soil crops, a shaded system keeps producing.

You need a level base, shade over the fish tank, mains power for the pumps and a plan for load-shedding, such as a small battery backup for the air pump. Check provincial permit rules before stocking fish.

Questions about this product

Do I need electricity for this aquaponics kit?

Yes. The water pump, timer and air pump all run on mains power. The air pump matters most, because fish need oxygen. During load-shedding, run it from a small inverter and battery. A gravity-fed grow bed and good shade also reduce stress on the fish if power drops for a few hours.

Is the water pump included in the kit?

The kit contents list a water pump with piping and fittings, but the supplier does not state the pump model. Ask us to confirm the exact pump and its flow before you order. If you want a stronger or spare pump, we sell a 1100 L/h submersible pump separately.

Do you deliver this kit to Limpopo farms?

Kamano delivers with its own trucks from Polokwane to all nine provinces in 1 to 3 days. At 63 kg shipping weight this falls in the 60 to 100 kg band (R1,450). Delivery is free once your order reaches R20,000 (VAT incl.). It is a bulky load, so give us a delivery address with truck access.
